Trump’s Giant Panda

by | Mar 31, 2025

Memphis is about 283 miles from St. Louis, MO where I grew up.

It’s a cool city with a lot of history, a unique music scene, and, most importantly for the purposes of our story, it’s the closest Zoo to St. Louis (at least, it was at the time) with a resident Giant Panda.

One year, my brother and I decided that we wanted to see Giant Pandas.

And we did the research, found out a trip to Memphis was required, and made a plan.

A few weeks later, after a lot of anticipation, we were finally driving south through the “Boot Heel” of Missouri, a tiny slice of Arkansas and, suddenly, into Memphis.

Have you ever seen a Giant Panda in person?

Contrary to what the name suggests, and the fact that they’re bears, they’re kind of, well… small…

The average panda weighs 150-250 pounds, which is big compared to a raccoon, sure, but not what you might expect from a bear named “giant.”

Now, “disappointment” is too strong a word. I absolutely loved our trip to see the pandas in Memphis.

But it definitely surprised our expectations in a number of ways. The results didn’t quite match with the anticipation.

And I’m wondering if the same thing is going to happen with Trump’s “Liberation Day” on Wednesday.

President Trump has promised that April 2nd will be “Liberation Day,” the day that he unleashes his tariff war upon the world.

And understandably, the markets are nervous:

But anyone who thinks this might be an apocalyptic day in the markets might be misguided.

I think a lot of the fallout from Liberation Day is already priced in.

Of course, there’s the chance that some traders are still holding out hope that the President is bluffing, but I don’t think that’s a big segment of the market.

I think Wednesday will be quieter than most expect.

Of course, there will still be big data points this month, including inflation updates — these could have a huge impact on the markets one way or the other.

But the actual “day of” on Wednesday? I’m guessing it will be a lot of sizzle and little steak.

Of course, that’s only if President Trump doesn’t say anything else outlandish — so probably not a smart thing to bet on. But it’s my two cents on this Monday.

Hope you have a good one.

To your prosperity,

P.S.: When we got to the zoo, we were greeted by an excited Zoo worker who said “are you here to see the giraffes?” Unbeknownst to us, a pair of baby giraffes were born while we were making the four hour drive. Sometimes, anticipation builds up to an unexpected but welcome surprise. Maybe we’ll see the same on Wednesday! Here’s hoping…
