The Safe Haven Play: Why Gold and Silver Keep Climbing

by | Feb 4, 2025

Howdy folks,

Markets have been on edge lately with all the tariff news, jobs data, and sector rotations — but one thing has stayed consistent: gold and silver just keep climbing.

While stocks have been bouncing around, gold is hitting new all-time highs and silver is back above $33.

That’s no coincidence.

Why Are Precious Metals Surging?

A couple of reasons:

  • Uncertainty – Tariffs, economic data swings, and Fed policy shifts (rate cut pause?) have investors seeking safer assets.
  • Supply Issues – Mining production hasn’t kept up with demand, keeping a tight lid on supply, giving us a textbook Economics 101 scenario where High Demand + Low Supply = Rising Prices
  • Inflation Hedge – While the Fed says inflation is cooling, anyone buying groceries knows better. Metals tend to rise when inflation sticks around.

It’s no wonder we’re seeing steady buying in gold and silver while other parts of the market remain shaky.

But here’s where it gets even more interesting…

Silver’s Outperformance: A Shift Worth Watching

One thing I’ve been watching closely is how silver has been outperforming gold lately.

Historically, when silver starts moving faster than gold, it’s often a sign that traders are growing more aggressive. Gold is a traditional safe haven, but silver has industrial uses, so when it’s leading, it can indicate bigger macro shifts in play.

Right now, silver is outpacing gold’s gains, which tells me demand isn’t just coming from the usual inflation hedgers — it’s also being driven by things like clean energy and tech-sector metals demand.

If this trend continues, silver could have a lot more room to run.

What’s Next?

I’ll be watching to see:

  • If gold holds its breakout levels or starts pulling back.
  • Whether silver keeps outpacing gold, signaling stronger demand.
  • How inflation-sensitive commodities react as the market processes economic data.
