The Pharmaceutical Problem AI Still Hasn’t Solved

I don’t usually wade into the AI hype, but something’s been sitting with me for a while now, and I figure it’s worth putting out there.

We keep hearing about how powerful artificial intelligence is going to be — how it’ll change everything, disrupt every industry and remake the world. Fine.

But here’s what I want to know: If AI is genuinely as powerful as everyone claims, why aren’t we feeding it all the medical school criteria, biochemistry knowledge and pharmaceutical data — and tasking it with solving one of the most frustrating problems in modern medicine?

I’m talking about drug side effects.

The Problem Every Drug Commercial Reveals

Listen to any drug commercial on the radio or TV, and every single one of them has nasty, gnarly side effects. Half of them could kill you if you’re allergic, and here’s the kicker: How do you even know if you’re allergic until you take the drug?

That’s not a small problem. It’s not even just a safety issue.

The current model often requires you to take other drugs just to offset what the first drug is doing — and then maybe another to manage what that second one causes.

It’s a pharmaceutical cascade that feels more like patch management than actual healing.

What Meaningful Progress Could Look Like

So here’s my thought: What if AI could help create pharmaceuticals that target one specific condition without triggering a pile of side effects?

What if it could analyze genetic differences and help doctors build individualized treatment plans instead of prescribing the same standard course to everyone?

The possibilities go beyond better drugs. AI could potentially support gene-editing research, personalized therapies and the search for treatments for diseases such as cancer and type-1 diabetes.

There appears to be real progress in applying AI to medicine, which gives me some hope, even if the work remains difficult and the results are still developing.

That is also where responsibility comes in. AI companies make enormous claims about what their systems can do, but those claims should eventually produce measurable human benefits. If this technology is as capable as advertised, show us meaningful progress.

Help cure a disease. Help doctors choose safer treatments. Help patients avoid taking one medication just to manage the damage caused by another.

If AI could solve even part of this pharmaceutical problem, that would be fantastic — and honestly, it would be well worth the investment and development we’re pouring into the technology. It might even improve the industry’s reputation, though that should be a byproduct rather than the goal.

I don’t know whether AI can accomplish all of this. I’m not pretending to have the answer. But if we’re going to talk about where artificial intelligence could deliver genuine value — not just hype or efficiency gains but real human benefit — this feels like the place to start.

I’m not pitching this as an investment theme or telling you to chase biotech stocks. I’m just saying: If this is one thing AI could help fix, it’d matter more than most of what we hear about.
