There’s a question I get asked all the time: “Geof, why don’t you trade Bitcoin?”
Simple answer: I hate Bitcoin.
Now before the crypto crowd comes after me with torches and pitchforks, let me explain where this comes from.
I became a mechanical engineer because I wanted to design things I could put my hands on and see — staplers, bridges and car engines. Physical stuff that exists in the real world.
My brother’s an electrical engineer, and he lives in mathematics and space.
Sure, you can feel electricity if you stick your finger in a socket, but otherwise it’s all abstract math that my brain just won’t wrap around. He thrives in that world…
I don’t.
Bitcoin is a techie thing that exists in a space you can’t see. It’s not my world, and it never will be.
Why Commodities Make Sense to Me
This engineering mindset is exactly why I love commodities so much — they’re real assets. They exist in the physical world and they matter in a way a line of code never will.
In a world that’s getting more abstract by the day, I think real-world skills are becoming more valuable, not less.
Things are shifting back toward people who understand how things work in the real world — the ones who build, repair and produce tangible value.
That tilt toward physical expertise only reinforces my focus on assets tied to real production and real utility.
You always have land, corn, beef, cows, pigs and chickens. These things don’t vanish when a server goes down or a line of code breaks.
They feed people. They grow. They exist independent of whatever the Tech (XLK) sector is doing. That’s why commodities feel resilient to me.
In uncertain times, real assets don’t just survive — they often become even more essential.
There’s no substitute for something that delivers value no matter what’s happening in the digital world.
Don’t get me wrong — I work with digital technology every day.
I build my own computers from components. I understand that AI and computer systems are real and valuable. I play with AI every day.
The Trust Problem with Digital Information
But here’s the thing that bothers me about purely digital assets and the systems behind them…
You never really know why the data is coming from one place instead of another, or whether the choices behind the scenes are shaping the output in ways you can’t see.
Where does AI get its information? Somebody programmed it to pull data from specific sources — and that’s where I get cautious.
Are you pulling all your news from MSNBC or from Fox News? Those are two totally different mindsets.
I don’t know where the data originates and I don’t know how it’s being interpreted. That uncertainty makes me uncomfortable when we’re talking about something that exists only in digital form.
Give me something I can touch, something that has value regardless of who’s controlling the server or writing the algorithm.
That’s where I’m comfortable. That’s where I’ll keep trading.
