Scared straight

by | Apr 25, 2025

Hey y’all,

My mom was in the hospital last week (everything’s good now! Although prayers for continued health are appreciated)…

She got a little infection, and they were making sure it was all under control.

One of the things I’ve noticed about the hospital, though, is that doctors love to use what I’d call “scared straight” tactics.

They often talk about the worst case scenario or the biggest possible consequence just to make sure that you’re really taking them seriously.

For example, my mom needs a few weeks of push antibiotics to make sure all of the infection is gone.

They trust any old idiot (namely: my brother and me) to administer these at home, and yet, you’d think the guy who taught me how to do them was teaching me how to handle nuclear waste.

Every sentence was a scare tactic, designed to make sure I was taking it seriously.

I guess a lot of people DON’T take IV antibiotics seriously? Seems like a foolish decision, but what do I know?

Anyway, it got old fast…

In some worlds, scare tactics are unnecessary. In others, they’re unavoidable.

The markets have scared a lot of traders straight over the last few months. And it’s not only annoying, it’s cost people a lot of money.

Here’s the thing: I don’t mean to be all “when life hands you lemons,” but the truth is, you should turn this downturn into an opportunity.

Make sure you’re paying close attention and learning all the lessons you can learn about navigating these vicious turnarounds.

It’s not fun to be “scared straight,” but it can be effective.

I’m going to make darn sure I disinfect with alcohol for 15 seconds before I ever administer an IV, and I’m going to make darn sure my accounts are protected before another massive pullback happens.

They aren’t fun lessons to learn, but they are important. So I hope you’ve been paying attention.

And while we’re not entirely out of the storm yet by any means, I think the opportunities are coming fast and furious.

I hope you’re ready to take advantage.

To your prosperity,
