We’ve reached that part of the cycle where a shoe company can slap AI onto an investor deck and retail traders respond like trained seals at feeding time.

Case in point: Allbirds (BIRD) — a company that looked one pivot away from irrelevance — suddenly caught a wave of retail buying after becoming the latest AI-flavored name. It raises a fair question: What business does a shoe company have in AI?

Struggling companies can now put on an AI mustache and investors pile in. Retail sees green candles and momentum, but under the surface, much of the move is being driven by CTA demand, which is where the disconnect begins.

Contrast that with the institutional view, which has been far more measured. There may be upside left, but the market is transitioning back toward fundamentals, not narratives.

What Institutions Are Actually Saying

This is where the gap becomes obvious.

Institutions are treating this as a market following a familiar pattern — a sharp move off the lows, a pause, then potential continuation — but they’re pairing that view with discipline instead of euphoria.

The Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) has been on a strong run and the S&P 500 (SPY) has added significant value. Volatility has compressed and market structure has improved, which supports the case for further upside.

But constructive doesn’t mean you buy everything. It means you stay selective.

Steel Beams vs. Confetti

This is still a market where selective longs can work, especially in companies with real earnings strength, but timing matters. We’re in the middle of earnings season, with about 70% of the S&P 500 by market cap reporting by May 1.

That raises the bar.

You need earnings strength, real AI infrastructure and actual cash flow. If companies miss on any of those, the market is likely to punish them.

The takeaway is simple: Separate the steel beams from the confetti. Real AI plays with revenue and cash flow deserve attention. Companies dressing up weak fundamentals with AI narratives do not.

The market is offering opportunity, but it’s not a free pass. Stay selective, stay disciplined and don’t get pulled into the noise.
